Desert Safety Tips

Know Before You Go
  • Carry at least 1 gallon of water per person per day when hiking or exploring. Desert dehydration sets in fast — don't wait until you're thirsty.
  • Always tell someone your plans before heading into remote areas like Petroglyph Canyons or Trona Pinnacles. Cell service is limited or absent.
  • Avoid hiking between 10am and 4pm in summer. Start early, return early. Keep a reflective emergency blanket and hat in your pack.
  • Your vehicle can overheat. Keep coolant topped off, carry extra water for the radiator, and never leave pets or children in a parked car.
